IN LOVING MEMORY
Dean Carpenter, RN, FNP-BC
Dean Carpenter was the heart of street medicine in Detroit. He brought an unparalleled degree of empathy, compassion and respect to the relationships he had with his patients and he embodied what it means to lead by example and inspire through action. Dean passed away unexpectedly in August 2019 and his loss has rocked the street medicine community in Detroit to its core – patients, providers and volunteers alike. Dean will always be missed for his quick wit, dark humor, endless knowledge of obscure medical facts, and infallible empathy. It was a privilege for us to have known Dean, to have learned from him, and to have served our patients alongside him. The patients Dean served and the work he cared about so deeply continue to require consistent resources, reliable providers and constant attention, and it is our privilege and responsibility to continue this work to the very best of our abilities. Dean taught us so much about medicine and about life, providing us with the foundation and the tools to serve our underserved neighbors and do everything in our power to make the invisible people visible.
