Street Runs

Our volunteers and preceptors head out into the streets of Detroit 1-2 times per week in search of patients in need of help. We carry our characteristic red backpacks filled with medications and supplies, in addition to care packages consisting food, water, and clothing. By going to these people directly, we increase their access to healthcare with the ultimate goal of improving health outcomes.

Clinics

Each Thursday, a group of volunteers host a medical clinic at the Fort Street Presbyterian Church to provide shelter residents with medical exams, screening, and medications at no cost. We also visit Pope Francis Center on Saturday mornings. Students practice their clinical skills while addressing health concerns of the residents. For many of these residents, this is their only access to regular healthcare. These clinics help our volunteers to establish rapport with our clientele, hone their practical medical skills, and decrease the demand for hospital services they may not be necessary.

Organization & Advocacy

Throughout the year, Detroit Street Care hosts drives and fundraisers to ensure that we have the supplies needed to provide for our patients. You’ll also find us as presenters or attendees at medical conferences around the state and beyond, sharing what we know and always trying to learn more. In 2019, our student board members presented to the Michigan Osteopathic Association and Michigan Cancer Consortium in addition to attending the International Street Medicine Symposium in Pittsburgh, PA. In 2022, we attended the International Street Medicine Symposium again, this time in Toronto, CA.
